Research on nonlinear phenomena in various physical systems has witnessed a steady growth in attention over the past few decades. The aim of this brain storming session is to provide an opportunity for a diverse group of young post-graduates and Ph.D. students as well as post-doctoral researchers to interact and discuss with the invited leading experts of the field. Micro-seminars provide an ideal platform for identifying important problems and brainstorming over future research and collaborations. The essential characteristic of a micro-seminar is that one may not expect a ready-made paper to be presented. Essentially the participants would share the insights, exchange ideas, methods and techniques in the fields of Applied Mathematics and Theoretical Physics without necessarily going through the details of calculations. The first meeting entitled microseminar on nonlinear phenomena was held in the Depatment of Applied Mathematics, Calcutta University on April 30, 2009. Nearly 20 participants actively participated. A well focussed second meeting on Nonlinear phenomena was conducted at the Insrumentation Science Department of Jadavpur University on 27th August, 2009. The theme of the meeting was “Micro Seminar on Nonlinear Phenomena”. Nearly 50 participants were present. The invited speakers are by invitation came from different Colleges , Universities and Institutes. It is felt that such type of academic activities preferably be held in the interval of 3/4 months for exchange of ideas and for nucleation of an active peer group in this region.
